A Snippet Of Pens
There are so many stories floating around on the web about where pens originated from. Who came up with the idea of pens? What happened that led to the invention of pens? There are so many variations it's really hard to answer those questions without questioning the source.
Some say the ancient Indians were the first to use pens. They used bird feathers to write literature in 5000 B.C. Conversely, they say that the Ancient Egyptians were first to come up with the idea of pens because they used them to write the Dead Sea Scrolls. They say the Dead Sea Scrolls date back to around 100 BC which is after the Ancient Indians. Either way the pen was invented by an ancient tribe.
Pens were more animated and fancy looking back in those days. Typically they used bird's feathers and dipped it in ink to write. In modern times we have improved on the mechanics of the pen but some of the more ancient and traditional types are still used today.
There is the dip pen or sometimes called nid pen. It resembles the modern fountain pen but defers by having an ink reservoir where as modern fountain pens have that ink reserve already installed. You have to dip the tip in ink to continue writing. The benefit of these pens is that it can handle thicker ink whereas if you were to use the fountain with the same ink, it will clog it. Dip pens are still used in today for illustration, calligraphy and comics.
Next there is the quill writing instrument. The most notorious of the bunch, these were used in medieval times to write on parchment. It eventually replaced the reed pen. The quill was actually a feather from large birds. The ink flowed through the shaft of the feather.
Another type of ancient instrument that was used is the Reed. It's still used in certain countries today because it is said to improve writing techniques. The Reed is made from bamboo and works similarly to the quill with the ink flowing through the shaft.
Most of the ancient pens used today serve a specific purpose like the quill for calligraphy but people collect them because it's a traditional and for just a fun thing to collect.
